What is an AI SEO agency, and how is it different from a normal one?
An AI SEO agency optimizes for the engines that answer questions, not just the engine that lists links. Traditional SEO targets Google’s ten blue links. AI SEO — also called Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO — targets the generated answers buyers now read first: Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. The discipline is different because these engines do not rank pages, they synthesize an answer and cite a handful of sources. The goal shifts from “rank number one” to “be the source the model quotes,” which depends on entity clarity, answer-first structure, schema, and authoritative corroboration rather than on classic link-count math alone.
A normal agency reports rankings; an AI SEO agency reports citation share — how often you appear in the generated answer for the questions your buyers ask. The two overlap (strong traditional SEO still helps you get cited), but optimizing for citation requires structuring content and entities specifically so a language model can extract, trust, and attribute your page. That is the work most agencies have not built yet, which is exactly why it is winnable now.
